Can you get SilverSneakers with a Kansas Medicare plan?  The answer is…it depends.  It depends on which supplemental plan you have chosen.  Remember, there are two ways to fill in the gaps of Part A and Part B:

  1. Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan along with Original Medicare (Part A and B)
  2. Medicare Advantage plan (Part C)

What is Silver Sneakers?

SilverSneakers is a health and fitness program that is available on some Medicare insurance plans.  SilverSneakers offers a basic membership at a gym, community center or other miscellaneous location (local park, neighborhood locations, etc…).

A SilverSneakers membership is a convenient way to stay active and healthy.  You can access things like strength training equipment, cardio equipment, pools, walking tracks, group classes and even online classes.

Medicare Supplement and SilverSneakers in Kansas

None of the Medicare Supplement plans in Kansas offer SilverSneakers.  In fact, a vast majority of Medicare Supplement plans in the county do not offer SilverSneakers memberships.

Medicare Supplement  plans were specifically designed to fill in the financial gaps of Original Medicare – and it does this very well.  These gaps include the deductibles, copays and coinsurance found in Part A and B.

Medicare Advantage and SilverSneakers in Kansas

Most Medicare Advantage plans offer some kind of free gym membership.  Some plans offer SilverSneakers.  Your ability to get SilverSneakers with a Kansas Medicare plan will depend on which Medicare Advantage plan you choose.

For example, Medicare Advantage plans in Kansas from Aetna and Humana both offer SilverSneakers at no extra cost.  Similarly, plans from United Healthcare also offer a gym membership.  However, their gym membership is called Renew Active.

Medicare Advantage is an all-in-one replacement for Part A and B.  Federal law states that a Medicare Advantage plan has to be at a minimum “actuarially equivalent” to Part A and B.  In addition, Medicare Advantage plans are allowed to offer benefits above and beyond Part A and B.  One of those benefits is a gym membership like SilverSneakers.

If a benefit like SilverSneakers is important to you, let us know that when you call us.  We have contracts with all the top insurance carriers in Kansas and can find the most suitable plan for you.

Original Medicare (Part A and B) doesn’t offer a SilverSneakers membership or any other health facility membership.
